It seems like I have been studying and researching color and clothing most of my life. I can remember going to the local department store, where my grandmother was the alteration seamstress, and picking out fabric for a new dress she would make me. One of my favorite creations from Grandma Baker was the patch work skirt she sewed out of leftover fabric swatches. It was a rainbow of colors that all blended into a beautiful one of a kind design.
My grandmother taught me how to sew. The first thing I made on her treadle sewing machine was a “crop top”. She measured me and cut a pattern from the day-old newspaper. Then I cut the design from watermelon color cotton fabric, sewed the seams, pinned and stitched white bias tape around the neck, armholes, and hem. My love of color, fashion and creating has never stopped.
In my early college years, I studied Speech Drama and Home Economics (with an emphasis on clothing & textiles). My vision was to be a costume designer. My career took a turn toward education and I am happy to say I taught many children and young adults to sew and create their own fashions. When I decided to continue my education, I was fortunate to receive a graduate teaching assistantship. This brought me on to the color and clothing psychology path of my training and career. I taught classes in fashion in the home economics department of a state university. I found I loved the research and learning about why we are attracted to color. This opened a whole new world of color analysis and consulting to me.
There have been numerous opportunities to expand my knowledge of color and apply it in my teaching and fashion career. My business, The Message of Color, is a new found opportunity that has led me to continued training with Arden Reece of Arden Reece Color. Her philosophy and knowledge have opened yet another door to the world of color. I am truly grateful for her help and the tools she has provided me with to expand and modernize my business.
